I started my dual-language children's book series because it was so hard to find Black lead characters in multilingual kids’ books. When I did, the stories were heavy! I’m slavery, oppression, protests— heavy. And don’t get me wrong, all kids need to know their history to know where we’re headed, but I was looking for a simple book to share with my toddlers, who were just too young and innocent for those stories.
I thought, “I just need ‘Goodnight, Moon’ in two languages with Black characters.”
Early readers, in particular, benefit from affirming representation, and my kids were no different. My kids speak three languages but only found Black lead characters in English books.
When we looked at their Spanish and Portuguese ones, they didn’t see their shade of brown. It didn’t take long before I realized they were craving books where they could see themselves in every language they speak.
When I started writing this bilingual children’s book series, it was a pet project to fix my own parenting problem.
I thought, well, I’m a professional writer... Why not just write one myself?
It’s been over three years since that idea sparked, and it was MUCH harder than I initially anticipated (shout out to children's book writers!), but it was so much rewarding than I ever imagined.
To date, I’ve put five dual language books into the world (in addition to one academic book about migration and four celebrity bios for tweens on pre-sale now, which you should also check out)!

Whether you’re a heritage speaker or new to learning a language, my Spanish/English and Portuguese/English rhyming books are age-appropriate and fun reads for parents and educators alike.
Please help these titles reach kids in your home, family, neighborhood, and community. And I don’t just mean the Black kids, either.
The earlier we start normalizing a value for diversity in the next generation, the sooner we create future leaders of tomorrow! An inclusive and fair world is what I dream of for my kids and their peers. I hope we can get there - one book at a time!
