Of all the freelancers I know, writers are the ones that seem to have the least overhead. We don’t do ourselves any favors by making it all look so easy and supply-less. The reality is that I spent a lot of time Amazon shopping when I went from being a hobbyist to a pro. I had to stock a solo office that was ready to roll.
Wondering what I’ve got on within arm’s reach?
Here’s what I stocked by Amazon shopping online:
Pilot RollerBall Pens - Yes, I know it’s silly that I still like ink pens when I use computers and voice messages so much. But, call me old school. Also, I like to doddle in meetings too, so good pens lift my mood.
White board calendars are my jam - I’ve never met one I didn’t like. The one in my office is the size of a teenager, and I use it to travel everything from deadlines to billing cycles. Scheduling is what makes the dream work.
I also have an 11x4 white board to keep track of reminders and to-do lists. I’ve learned to spare myself heavy books and lost scraps of paper by committing to a dry erase board by my desktop.
My gooseneck phone holder makes it possible for me to look like an adult while on a phone video call. My desk is a mess. The angle from my desktop to my face always makes me look like I have a double chin. This long-arm stand is worth its weight in gold. I can have decent client meetings! And keeping my phone in the holder means I don’t lose it or have posture problems from looking down at my desk so much.
