Who woulda thunk the BBC would be this fun?
Sexy Jesus. Grizzly Griselda. Big money Mark at Meta…
They let me start writing, ya’ll. Things are getting racy over here in these BBC streets!
I’ve spent over a decade away from pitch rooms. In my early twenties, I interned at the Fader Magazine and got to work with some of the greats.
Watching the editors’ eyes sparkle at the most randomest thoughts one minute and then kill even the best-envisioned stories the next was great training for real life as an entrepreneurial creative. It’s pretty manic up here in my brain and I filter a lot before anything comes to life for an audience.
Erykah Badu’s iconic “I’m an artist, so I’m sensitive about my $h!t,” comes to mind.
Let’s be clear. I’m ok with rejection but I take it better in writing. I guess I do everything better in writing. I’m not the quickest on my feet when it comes to verbal communication. My face cringes before my brain has the wherewithal to tell my cheek muscles to cut it out.
Anywhooooo… this new writing adventure with the BBC has been fun because it brings a little of that old thing back.
Throw out an idea. Sometimes, it sticks like spaghetti on a ceiling, and other times, it lands flat on your face. Either way, it’s an adventure with an ending no one can truly predict. And the adventure is going to make you feel something!
Since going freelance, I’ve really shied away from passion pieces like the ones I’ve been able to write recently. They’re slower to write. They’re unwieldy.
I have a vision of how a story will play out and then a source will derail my plans. If I were getting paid by the hour, it’d be dope. But when you’re paid to get it done, nothing accounts for all that creative swirl.

Hey, I’m not complaining. My recent stories have been fun to write and funky to read.
And now, more than ever, I get to call on diverse experts from all corners of the world— both geographically and experientially. Together, we tell stories that hit home!
Alas, I’m really proud of this work. I hope you enjoy it too…
